Insurance Companies Don't Care About You

And That's No Joke

Sometimes, people tell such outrageous lies that even I can't find the humor in them. Such as when the insurance industry came out to say that it was worried about rising costs. Really. A for-profit industry is suddenly worried about people spending more money. They're only looking out for your best interest, of course.

I've always found that "Truth" anti-cigarette campaign really annoying. Not because they're wrong about tobacco companies being evil corporations who don't care about killing people; what bothers me is the demonization of a single class of companies when the same argument could be applied to any large, for-profit business.

Car companies don't care about you. Drug companies don't care about you. And insurance companies, which (let's not forget) feel they have the right to "work with legislators" via lobbyists, certainly don't care about you.

In reality, any company with investors is more or less required to make the most money it can for them; it is therefore not the company's job to privilege human beings over the bottom line. That's capitalism, baby.

I've reposted FunnyorDie's take on this issue, in part to cheer myself up, but in part because it's the best counterargument I've seen thus far -- yes, even better than the Democrats' admittedly quick response.
